Nobody will disagree with me
that to spread a canard about a woman is a dirty thing to do Nevertheless, it is a pastime for many in our
society to indulge in such activity. Moreover, without bothering to examine
whether any iota of truth is there in this canard this is transmitted from
person to person like wild fire in no time. In most of the occasions this kind
of canards are found to be baseless which are borne out of animosity or dislike
towards that lady.
Be that as it may, how can we
dcescribe when such a canard is spread
about a woman who is no more? Can
we term it as wretched, obnoxious, cruel
or dirty? If a canard or allegation is raised about a man/woman who is
alive, he/she will be in a position to defend himself/herself or deny the same
and explain the factual position. Nevertheless, it will be appreciated that it
is not possible in the case of a dead lady.
The matter which I am
referring here is about the startling
and damaging revelations made recently about Malayalam’s famous literary
personality and poetess, Kamala Surayya who is known as Madhavikkutty by two
so-called women cultural leaders of Kerala viz., Indu Menon, an upcoming
literary personality and Leela Menon, the famous lady journalist. It is
ironical that they have made these revelations even while claiming to be close
friends of Kamala Surayya.
To elaborate, the first among
them viz, Indu Menon had made these disparaging revelations about Kamala
Surayya in an interview published in Malayalam weekly ‘Mangalam’ claiming that
she had maintained close links with the latter. In that interview Indu Menon
had alleged that Kamala Surayya is a prey to the so-called ‘Love Jihaad’. She
further stated that Madhavikutty had nurtured casteist feelings and allowed
only her into Madhavkutty’s private room. Interestingly, even though she had not named the person for whom
Madhavikutty was said to have been converted to Islam and who had cheated her
by refusing to marry, she gave enough indications as to the person involved. She
had disclosed in the said interview that Madhavikutty had fallen in love with a
very important person who is a political leader in Kerala having three wives and who is very
fond of poetry and ghazal for whom she had got converted to Islam. She further
stated that due to the threat from his community and party, he had cheated
Madhavikkutty.
As for Leela Menon, she had made
the disparaging remarks about Madhavikutty in an article published in ‘Janmabhoomi’
which happens to be the mouthpiece of Sanghparivar who had ruffled feathers at
Madhavikutty’s converting to Islam. The interest of RSS-Sanghaparivar combine to
publish such an article in their mouthpiece is well taken which is nothing but
their anti-Muslim stance. In a democracy, anybody is free to trust any
religion. It is upto the individual himself/herself to decide which religion
he/she should trust for which other’s permission is not required. In our country
there were many such instances of Hindus converting to Muslim or Christianity. Understandably,
Madhavikutty is one among them to have embraced Islam for whatever reasons.
It is to be mentioned here
that Leela Menon had disclosed the name of the Muslim League leader for whom
Madhavikutty was said to have been converted to Islam. She had also indicated
that the cultural leaders including her, Sugatha Kumari and Vishnu Narayanan Namboothiri had planned
to conduct a one-day dharna at Kannur in protest against the murder of RSS
leader Jayakrishnan Master in which Madhavikutty had agreed to participate;
nevertheless she could not make it as she had gone to the residence of that
Muslim League leader on his invitation where they had sex…
What are the reasons that had
prompted these two so-called women cultural leaders to make such disparaging
and dirty disclosures about Madhavikutty and tried to denigrate her image in
the eyes of the public? Whether they had stooped to such a level to spread
canards about her with a view to get cheap publicity or was it part of any
conspiracy is not at all clear.
It can be stated without
mincing any words that the disparaging and damaging disclosures made by both
the above gentle women cultural leaders about Madhavikutty while claiming to
have maintained closed links with the latter when alive, is nothing but an
insult to the pride of women Moreover, surprisingly, these women are
well-educated and who boast themselves to be the custodians of good cultural
values. It is thus shocking and intriguing that these women have chosen to
make such damaging disclosures that too about a woman who is no more while
natural justice demands people to desist
from such a filthy action.
Under the circumstances,
words are not enough to describe the attempts at making damaging disclosures
about such a person who had made a mark in literature and poetry and has thus
become famous. In a nutshell this can be described as degradation of the
mindset or mean acts of sadists. Such kind of people who find enthusiasm in
spreading canards about a dead woman can be called as dead body eaters. Cultural
Kerala can only be ashamed to have given birth to such people who stoop to any
level to denigrate the image of even the dead while pretending to be her close
friends.
